Navy Command/Directorate of Navy Acquisitions (DNA)
Turning technical expertise into confident communication, stronger influence and effective cross-team collaboration.
Scope of Requirement
The DNA recognised that while many employees possessed strong technical knowledge and professional qualifications, there was a need to complement these with professional and interpersonal skills. Working across high-value programmes and diverse stakeholder groups means staff need to be able to confidently manage conversations, influence decisions, and collaborate across teams. The DNA wanted to develop a more confident, collaborative, and adaptable workforce capable of delivering stronger outcomes.
Why Quanta?
Quanta has worked with Navy Command since 2012, with our relationship recently expanding to support the DNA. We recently delivered a tailored professional skills learning pathway to the DNA. This was focused on communication, influencing, stakeholder engagement, and collaboration, helping employees complement their technical expertise with the interpersonal skills needed when working on high pressure, complex projects.
Following challenges with a previous provider, DNA explored alternative learning partners and were introduced to Quanta through recommendations. Our reputation for high-quality tailored delivery and positive learner experiences gave them confidence that we could support their development objectives.
Solution
We adopted consultative approach to understanding DNA’s challenges and identifying the right learning Government Campus learning pathway. Through a series of discovery sessions, Account Manager, Sophie Warnes, worked closely with DNA before bringing in Michelle Hines, our People Development and Leadership Specialist, and expert facilitator Adam Montgomery to explore DNA’s requirements in greater depth.
Using these insights, we developed a targeted learning pathway built around three complementary programmes: Influencing Skills, Running Effective Meetings, and High Impact Presentation Skills. We designed these courses for employees at all levels, not just senior leaders, recognising that the ability to influence others and communicate confidently is essential for anyone working with stakeholders across complex, high-value projects.
To reinforce learning and strengthen collaboration, we also delivered our Heist! The Ultimate Team Collaboration Game to 36 learners, including senior leaders, providing an immersive experience that encouraged cross-team working and relationship building.
Innovations/new practices: We adopted a consultative, multi-stage discovery process to understand both organisational and learner needs before recommending solutions. Our facilitators tailored training to reflect the realities of working within a Ministry of Defence environment, ensuring learning was relevant and could be immediately applied within workplace roles. We also enhanced learning through experiential activities, using Heist! alongside facilitator-led debriefs to help learners evaluate individual and team strengths, identify areas for improvement, and gain a deeper understanding of the behaviours that contribute to effective cross-team collaboration.
Impact
A key challenge was bridging the gap between strong technical expertise and the interpersonal skills required to operate effectively on complex, high-pressure projects. We also needed to encourage greater collaboration across teams and help learners build confidence when influencing stakeholders, presenting ideas, and leading conversations. By combining professional skills training with experiential learning, we helped create stronger cross-team relationships and more effective ways of working.
Learner feedback has been consistently strong, with satisfaction scores frequently reaching 9–10/10. They have reported increased confidence in stakeholder management, presentations, and workplace communication, while the collaborative elements of the programme created valuable networking opportunities across the DNA. The success of the programme has strengthened our partnership with them, resulting in additional Heist! events and further development programmes, including Difficult Conversations, alongside ongoing investment in qualifications such as PRINCE2®, MSP®, MoR®, and APM.
