Manage and Scale Kanban Systems

You learned the basics of Kanban and how to design a single system in the Kanban System Design course. The next step on your journey is to learn how to scale out to multiple connected systems. In Kanban Systems Improvement, you will learn how to manage and optimize those systems using metrics and evolutionary change.

In any workflow system there will be sources of delay, variability, and bottlenecks. Learn to proactively discover these challenges and then apply techniques to improve or smooth the flow of work.

Description

Who is this course for

Anyone who has attended KSD and wishes to gain the KSI qualification to complete their path to KMP. As well as those wishing to learn how to improve Kanban systems.

Purpose of the course

This is part 2 of a 2-part credential certificate programme for KMP. Building on the Kanban systems you are now able to design, this course delves into the improvement and optimisation of Kanban systems.

You will learn how to

  • Understand the basics of evolutionary change and why it is the preferred, humane approach and effective at dealing with resistance to change

  • Utilize the Kanban cadences to provide important feedback loops to grow, evolve, and improve your Kanban system for continuous improvement and sustainable customer satisfaction

  • Manage dependencies across multiple Kanban systems

  • Utilise the fundamental Kanban metrics to make informed decisions

  • Use tools for balancing demand and capacity, including managing variability, improving flow, and shaping demand

Prerequisites

If you have not yet completed Kanban System Design (KSD), we strongly recommend you take KSD prior to taking this course. Many people think they have a good understanding of Kanban and can skip directly to KSI, but that rarely works well in our experience.

Benefits for you as an individual

Designing Kanban systems is only the start and once designed they need to be improved and optimised. This is where this course comes in. It also comes with the added benefit of gaining the Kanban Management Professional qualification if you have followed the pathway from KSD.

Benefits for your organisation

This course concentrates on the complex demands of a multi-teamed organisation and explores how to maintain momentum beyond initial improvements realized from a successful Kanban implementation. For organisations seriously seeking to use Kanban then this course is essential.

Kanban an Evolutionary Change Model

  • Motivation for the Kanban model
  • Evolutionary Change
  • Kanban Maturity model (KMM)

Additional Exam Information

Delegates successfully completing the course will receive a certificate of completion for the Kanban Systems Improvement course.

Those having completed this course and the Kanban System Design course receive the Kanban Management Professional (KMP) credential.

Pre-Coursework

A small amount of pre-course reading is required; delegates are recommended to read “Kanban” by David J Anderson and instructions on how to download a free e-copy will be provided.
